unclear what people consider "design research"

81% of practicing designers say they engage in research

65% of department chairs

Metropolis Survey 2005 about research and design, 1051 designers, educators, and students responded

our emerging research culture has a lot of challenges

move attention to designing for systems (contemporary complex problems)

move toward attention economy

look at AIGA 2015 statement

move from simple to complex, from artifacts to strategies, raising in complexity from components to products to systems to interacting systems

reference Shelly Evanson, and service design, look at the schools of thoughts site

what is the knowledge base necessary to design at that scale and that complexity?

reference Richard Lanham, The Economics of Attention, for the shift from an information economy to an attention economy.

reconceivein the people fro whome we design as active contributors rather than as customers or users

reference Gerhard Fischer, Beyond Couch Potatoes

enew media change the structure and onctes...

reconciling the trend toward globalization and t eh desire to preeeve cultural identity and production.

Gobal 3.0 makes it possible for some any more poepo to plug in and paly and you are going tos ee every colof of the human raimnbow take part. Reference Friedman, The world is flat.

distinguish research from tenurable activites for todays discussion

what is necessary to move design forward as a field and to nurture its research culture

Liz Sanders: Design research: today and tomorrow

practice covers all areas of design in her enterprise MakeTools, has most recently been working exclusively with Architects and interior space planners

how ift feels today, design and research are blurring at the front end of the design process. It is a time of disruption and confusion. She was trained as a Social Scientitst. "The Fuzzy Front End" of the design process.

Emergence of co-desing and co-dreation brings unceratingty. Who designs? Who is in control?

New design domains coming into creation. Reference second life as a place in which these domains emerge.

new design disciplines, sucha as service desng and transfromatin design are appeargin.

build a visual map of design research, text description follows

top pole is "design-led", bottom pole is Reseach led

bottom is tools that were brough fro other reseach disciplines. the top maps tools brought by "desiger'"

east and west have to do with mind set foof the people for whom or whith whom we are disginin. west is "sepert mindset" see the peoples at th they design FOR, East is Participatory Mindset, peopl seen as pertners in co-creation.  We can snd should be designing with them as opposed to for them.

locates human factors and ergonomis in the lowerleft quadrant, spehre occupies alomost the whole of the SW quad
User Centerd Design activities ocupies the lower 2/3rds of the wester half.

east side lower Scandinavinan,
east third top down scandinavina participatory design

mindset differnce is culturally marked according to Sanders

Lefst side is going on in america, right side is europe no communication tween

usability testing occupies the middle 20% from Norht to south, but hard against the west side,
applied ethnography occupies the same volume withn the lower third in the middle

lead user innovation research occupies 10% is at 50% north to south just right of center

contextual inquiry just lefto of center, just above midline north to south also 10% by volume

Design and emotion upper center,

Critical Design (Dunne and Raby) top right corner, roughly 25% N-S, 30% E-W, critical design makes us think.

Probes exist within the critical design area

Generative design research top right third, with generative tools within

interesting action is in the top half of the map

design will become synomous with design research at thr front end fo the process

we will need hibritd practitioneers

design researchers

research designers

do-desing and co-dreation

cod designing teams will expan to indlucd

design research landscape will contintue to grow and chant into virtual dimentions

designing willswitch from focus on product to purpose

cites the potential for at least six new disciplines of design practice

increasingly we care a great deal about undersstanding other cultures..

research is about knowledge building

University's mission/role? build knowldedge,

design knowledge is evidence that is hsared, questioned, and that can be further developed.

majority of design reeserch in the US is proprietary and is not shared

received assumption is that students are taught from simple to complex, what happens when we turn this inside out and upside down?

is it required that all students be doing the same thing at the same time? with the same outcomes?

is our western pedagogy still viable at this point in time?

It is important that designers come to know the epistemology of their discipline? How do we know what we know? What is our ability to defend this as we work collaboratively? Especially in the sciences... difficult to collaborate with scientists who know with absolute certainty how they know what ehy know.

where do I go if I'm an undergraduate doing this thing when I graduate? To practice in this transformative way?

It's a mess right know. Need to aquire a research led approach right now to be competitive in a bigger research firm. Go to smaller compnies. (sanders)

(poggenpohl) go out there an get roughed up a bit by the profession, to gain the experience to get into a graduate program that will give you the credibility to do that thing.
