Design in K-12 Education
there exists a Masters degree in Design Based Learning at Cal Poly Pomona
Meredith Davis
makes a distinction between pre-professional education of K-12 students and Teaching other K-12 subjects through design (the panel will talk about the latter). Preparing all students through design.
Don't think of yourself as going into the environment to help, rather look at the classroom teachers as content experts.
Meredith will talk about standards.
1992 Dept of Labor, SCANS Commision

National Science Standards vs National Visual Arts Standards
science standards inorporate design knowledge. @061 Bechmarks for science literacy
by contrast the visual arts standards absolutely no mention of desigh, it is listed only in the pre-amble as a medium between clay and glass blowing
the art ed community doiesnt' understand design in the way that we understand it
it may be easuer to get in through other subjetc areas.
book called Content Knowledge is a summary of the standards in the 12 areas.
references Nigel Cross, Designerly Ways of Knowing. Many teachers perceptions of what design is have to do with physical and mechanical skills, such as drawing. Designers can help with: understanding language, understanding tech understanding people...
California tenth grade alnguage arts standards: distinguish between denotative and connotative meanings of words
Concept mapping (from Cornell&....) on the creation of narrative diagrams. Very crude materials allow students to understand and share very abstract relationships.
California standards are the most specific Meredith has ever seen...
trying to figure out how much information there needs to be to make a good scenario
looking at scenario building and role play as a way to do deep exploration of content areas, that will reveal and construct knowledge.
be collaborative with the teachers and invest in the population.

Method of Design-Based Learning
Doreen was a classroom teacher for 14 years and grabbed the methods from our profession. Constructivist learning is the name for what we do within educational theory. The spatial domain is one that we cover, and is a point within ed theory. The brain continues to process thoghts within the spatial domain, even when one is off task, even when one is sleeping.
English Language Learners can move more quickly into english when taught within constructivist, spatial models
references the Taxonomy of Learning
creativity is at the highest level of the Taxonomy
subject of Transfer of Learning
specific transfer, and non-specific transfer area which is concepts, principals, values and morals, what design brings to the classroom is the teaching/learning of those things. References Gardner and Perkins idea of a "Near Experience" and armed with that experience a learner can go someplace. THey call that near experience a hug.
Reference Jerome Bruner "If we can find these universal principals, then we can find the common thread, and then we can teach alot of things"
Doreen's method is one she calls "Backwards Learning"
look at the big concept that one wants to teach
"morality" in the example frontward thinking was to read the Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne
she created criterai for an imaginary city that the students proposed morality/behaviors for
need more detail
six and 1/2 steps of backwards thinking
1 what do I need to teach?
2 identify a problem from the curriculu
1/2 stat as never before seen design challenge
3 set criteria for assessment (list dont wants and needs based on curriculum standas and conten, plan evaluation
4 let student give it a try
build instant 3d models
preent ad get feeback
as how an why
ssess according to prees criteria, talk
talk
talk
write
5 teach guided lessons
research information
speak
write
compute
make comparisons
chart, diagram, and map results
6 studenst revise design
rebuild models
organia a sequende of challenges
apply lessons
assess
synthesisz
in order to do backwards teaching a teacher has to "back off" and not ...... the answer
now examples from a second grade classroom from Miss Daarina Abdus-Samad
Tries to teach students to enjoy learning
is mandated to teach the the standards in a certain way
Case study in the Heart Acre Project
part of her thesis project
Teaches in Norma Coombs Alternative School, Pasadena California
Have moved desks and chairs out of the center of the room,
constructed the virtual city in the space
her test scores have gone up as she has adopted design-based learning each year for past three years.
curriculum integration chart. standards are connected to guided lessons through the design challenge
"never before seen" is a criteria for asking/challenging the learners to reach high, to move in the abstract realm of ideas (?did I get that last bit right?)
